Why Do People in the Bay Area Move? If it’s not a bigger house (too obvious), what is the driving reason?
It’s been a roller coaster since Covid, and for a myriad of reasons, people continue to move in and out and all around the Bay Area.
So there are obviously a ton of different driving factors for all this moving around, and we’re going to look at some of those right quick and ponder the why.
A big one that will surprise no one is the cost of living threshold. People become increasingly aware that no matter how much they work, and even with a super good salary, you will not be living comfortably. Housing costs around here will prevent that stress-free life from ever becoming a reality. People start to look at areas with better housing value.
Another reason people cite is a declining quality of life in the specific neighborhood, part of town, or city they live in. People feel like stuff’s falling apart. It feels unsafe or unlivable. Sometimes it’s lots of street people, lots of public drug use, and other criminal activity. Sometimes it’s gridlocked traffic or an overall feeling that things are too hectic. People desire a different climate.
A challenge that becomes a deal breaker for some is dating and social fatigue. If you’re living in SF, or Oakland, or really any of the big cities in the Bay, forming deep social connections can be challenging. There’s the issue of the sheer amount of people, the lack of social accountability, and the intense work culture. People find themselves hitting that point of dating app fatigue.
The vibe in the Bay Area is often referred to as a pressure cooker. It’s like high pressure, high reward. There’s a lot folks stand to gain here, especially professionally. But some folks can’t take the heat. They simply desire to take it down a notch—a little bit of chill in their lives. It’s not unreasonable.
The flip side of that is it’s also a big draw—a major draw even. Especially in the tech industry, people literally have FOMO (fear of missing out) around not living in the Bay Area. This place is the center of the action. All the most cutting-edge AI everything is coming out of the Bay. It’s like people who want to be actors moving to Hollywood—you gotta go where the action is. It’s a huge draw to living in and moving to the Bay Area.
In that same vein, if you want to socially network, you have to be in the epicenter of venture capitalists.
Outside of the tech stuff, though that’s a dang big factor, there are tons of other reasons people move here or move around within the plethora of different areas in the Bay.
The climate here is stellar. You won’t get snowed in ever, and it doesn’t get so hot you can cook eggs on your dashboard. There’s a lot to be said for moderate, livable temperatures year-round.
Furthermore, the diversity of outdoor beauty in close proximity is amazing. You can hit the redwoods and go to the coast easily in the same day. People want to live in a city but visit the great outdoors easily, and the Bay Area offers that in droves.
The cities themselves are also very special. They are super diverse and very urban.
