What if you could plan a functional dream house to perfectly fit your life?
OK, so today we’re thinking about if you could design your life first, what kind of home would support it? The first thing that comes to mind immediately is adaptability. This dream home would have to be designed to seamlessly evolve along with your many life stages.
The first feature of functionality might be a single story home designed with wide doorways. This type of layout is easier for both little kids and older people, and even accommodates some of life‘s surprises such as unexpected injuries, or finding yourself taking care of a loved one, who is limited mobility.
The next priority might be low maintenance. The idea is at your house is somewhere where you get to enjoy your life. Enjoy your time, relax. A high maintenance home, steals your time ,and your money for that matter. When we say low maintenance ,We’re talking durable materials, space that’s designed for life to be lived in easily and comfortably. Like built in storage, that makes decluttering simple. If done correctly, a space can require a pretty low amount of weekly upkeep and cleaning…and that does sound dreamy.
To Not to be redundant, but it is so important it’s worth saying twice; a clear decluttered space is a key part of a functioning , life, and the type of home most adults desire.
Other features that promote an open roomy type of feeling are high ceilings, and space thats dedicated to being calm and relaxing. Like a clean, quiet office, or a meditation corner or reading nook. In a crazy space it can feel very hard to have organized, concise, and efficient thought processes. A disastrous room, will absolutely make our minds feel messy.
Life creates a lot of natural clutter, junk mail, wrappers, shoes, backpacks, car keys, the list goes on and on. It’s all things we need, it’s not useless garbage. But having a home that is designed to help us organize all of these things easily and without constantly searching for space is a huge underlying subject for dreamy comfortable spaces.
Here’s another big one, how about those bills? For a lot of us, a dream home features environmental harmony. That might sound like hippie mumbo-jumbo, but it is a highly functional quality. What we’re referring to, is passive solar designs. Natural daylight and smart energy system systems, like heat pumps, and rainwater catchers. It’s an expensive time to be alive and yes, it is a huge perk to be able to save on utility bills a lot of of us also really care about our impact on the planet and the footprint we leave. for many of us, our dream home aligns with our values by incorporating long-term ecological sustainability.
Now you could take this topic and really run with it. We could design skylights that are positioned to catch the perfect sunrise and sunset, to view the Milky Way and fill your kitchen with dreamy moonlight. We could design elevators up to beautiful rooftop gardens.
If we’re moving away from magical and moving back towards being practical, living in California, we could start thinking of dreaming of the most fire safe homes possible. You could do a home that’s primarily underground, perhaps built into the side of a hill, kind of like a hobbit home in Lord of the rings, but big person sized. theoretically a fire would burn right over top, and spare you the loss of all your belongings.
There are fire resistant home materials, your dream home could be resistant from roof top to basement. There are lots of water tanks attached to rooftop, sprinklers, built in ways that people combat a fire, even if the power goes out.
For most of us, our California dream house, would be a structure that would not burn down.
A lot of us would absolutely want our dream home to have space for people we love. It’s an amazing feeling to know you have a safe, and even really awesome space for older parents or adult children or even a divorced best friend or cousin to live, because it’s hard out there. It would be such a feeling of peace and safety and stability, to be able to easily provide that soft landing.
The concept of a dream home could either be looked at from a logistical standpoint, or a fantastical one. We could be thinking about pools that play music and project fairy lights with beautiful waterfalls, and a cat palace. or we could go the direction of structural integrity, functionality, longevity, efficiency, board room buzz words.
Different types of people would take different approaches to how they would think about designing their dream home to fit their life. In our imaginations, the possibilities are endless.
No matter what sort of person you are, it sure is a fun thing to think about and as we dream of all of the perfect qualities we would want our house to have, maybe we will stumble on a few ideas that are actually within our reach.
