Give her what she wants, the house buying version.
There are whole research companies devoted to what women want when buying a house. It’s a
market everyone wants to corner. It’s the dragon everyone wants to tame, the mystery that
everyone hopes to unearth. What it is that truly speaks the female home buyer.
The truth is there is no one thing that will sway her fancy. She wants the whole package, baby.
So let’s talk about it.
Women live very full and busy lives. There is work, commuting, errands, chauffeuring, endlessly.
There is stuff being dropped, back packs, towels, weird packs of ear plugs and batteries and
paper towels, seriously, stuff everywhere. Real talk, it is women in charge of the sorting,
organizing and place finding for all this aforementioned stuff.
Which brings me to my point- women home buyers want functionality. Women want places to
keep the things we need to run our lives. Closets are a big asset. Lots of them, and big ones.
Space for storage, garages, pantries, built in shelving. It’s good, it’s useful, it’s helpful. Home
aspects that facilitate the smooth operation of daily life, that’s sexy.
The location is a big deal to women. Location rates higher priority to women home buyers than
home size. Location is higher priority to women home buyers than for men.
Tying in a little bit to the location preference, is security. Women home buyers want to feel safe
in their neighborhood and in their home.
This might sound silly, but let me tell you friend, it is not. Women want a good ass laundry room,
and they want it in a good location. Nobody is excited about walking in the door to see their dirty
laundry pile. It’s like getting in from work, to be greeted by another job. A boss laundry room,
with space, and a nice door you can close to hide the ever present clothing mound, is very
appealing.
Another important feature that ranks highly for women is that a home be low maintenance.
Women are overwhelmed by parenting, careers, relationships, staying in boss mode is a lot.
Painting is no problem, a few little things here and there is to be expected. But homes with
ongoing big maintenance tasks are a lot to ask, of the boss. When you’re running everything
else, there’s very little time to mow and hedge. Low maintenance is where it’s at.
A real nice spot to socialize in the home is a feature that women value. It doesn’t have to be
anything fancy, a lovely breakfast nook or a great big island you could sit around with friends. A
spot for wine or coffee with a couple of the girls, is a must have.
There’s plenty of desirable aspects we could tick through; women love a great kitchen, and
would really like a two car garage and so on.
But the bottom line is women want good bones and a smart layout. Think smarter not harder
over here.
The home is a place in service of the lives we lead. Women would like a home that serves us
well, and with out asking a lot from them, at the end of a long day. The home is where you get
everyone to bed and put your feet up. It’s safe, it’s comfortable, it’s time to rest.
