The devastating Surfside condo collapse has been on everyone's minds the last couple of weeks—including and especially anyone who lives in or owns a high-rise condo.

It begs the question: Could a tragedy like the one in Surfside happen here?

A few years ago, SF's Millennium Tower made national news when it was found to be sinking and tilting. (Home values plummeted shortly thereafter.)But as it turns out, it's not the only thing that's sinking.

In fact, the entire Bay Area has sunk more than three inches as a result of its sprawl and development over the decades—a major concern given rising sea levels.

While there's nothing to suggest the Millennium Tower is in danger of collapsing, the sobering news out of Florida is a reminder of what's possible when consensus and responsibility are unclear.

No doubt HOA meetings are having their largest attendance rates in a long time as residents across the country have renewed interest in the maintenance and upkeep of their shared buildings.
